The role of a business analyst in agile
I ran into Kevin Brennan tonight at #agile2011. I was glad for the chance to talk to him because Ive received quite a few questions from BAs in Winnipeg about how their role will change when they work on agile projects and Kevin has been doing a lot of work with the agile extension to IIBAs BABOK.
Here are is a summary of our conversation:
Here are is a summary of our conversation:
- How many BAs can articulate the goals and objectives of their company, team, or project? Start here if you cannot.
- Even if you are able to articulate the goals and objectives - can your team? Without understanding the project goals and objectives the team doesnt have enough information to help them make decisions about scope and priorities and often makes decisions based on Is this helping somebody? which can increase the scope of the project.
- BAs can help facilitate the alignment of priorities and goals - enabling the business to speak to the development team with one voice.
- Facilitate requirements and a common understanding of the proposed system through inclusive modeling techniques (eg. user story maps, silent brainstorming, product box - see more here)
- Facilitate the acceptance of change (rather than the restriction of it).
- BAs dont do any less analysis, but they will end up doing less documentation. This reminds me of this tweet:
“Documents we write communicate our good thinking. You can write one without thinking. You can communicate good ideas without a document.” – Jeff Patton (Jan. 19, 2011 - twitter)
- As a BA, if you need to create a document, it will more likely be after the story is complete rather than before creating the story. Some additional guidelines for documentation on agile projects can be found here.
- Collaborate with testers who share many of the same concerns about priorities, goals, scope, and requirements.
- One thing that doesnt change is the need to work with the business as any software produced by the team may change the business processes. Even with iterative delivery, there will be adjustments to be made.

What a Wonderful Word Wall!
I have been putting off updating my word wall for so long, but Ive finally done it! Ive spent nearly two full days on these fabulous word wall sets and I am so excited for them!
First things first, lets start with a fun freebie! These alphabet picture cards have super cute pictures on them, and the vowels are a different color border than the consonants! So fun!

Now... before we move onto the word wall sets, let me back track to one of my first posts... spelling success! Each time I introduce a new word to the class, we put the word on the word wall and one lucky student gets to wear a crown that has the same word/picture on it. I attach the word to the crown via velcro for easy storage.

Anyway... each of my word wall sets have two copies of the word... one that is the perfect size for your word wall, and one that is the perfect size for a word crown! Each of the sets is $4, and theyre available at TPT by clicking the pictures below!

It was a lot of work but I absolutely love how they came out... particularly the borders for the preview page!!!
Im linking the alphabet freebie signs up with manic monday!

Study Guides Strategies to Think Like a Genius!

Study Guides & Strategies
"The Study Guides and Strategies web site is authored, maintained and supported by Joe Landsberger as an independent educational public service.

Any Juice?
The first time you visit the Study Guides & Strategies site, you might be thinking "Big deal! Just a lifeless text-based site with a lot of hyperlinks to whatever! I better get back to the real life in my Second Life!" Wait a minute, give this site a minute or two and you will discover some amazing articles or tools that could assist you in becoming a more effective learner (Dont judge a book or site by its cover!). In 2006 alone, this amazing site had 11.8 million page views. I wonder why? The best way to find out is to explore some of the wonderful study guides on this site covering topics such as learning (preparation), studying, classroom participation, learning with others, online learning and communicating, reading skills, preparing for tests, research, projects and much more.
This amazing collection of study guides are written using a simple and effective design philosophy, which enables us easily to digest and learn (No unnecessary jargon and graphics! Also, the study guides are perfect for handouts, too!). On top of that, many of these study guides are translated into several languages (around 30), including Arabic, French, Indonesian, and Spanish (The different language translations (clickable icons) are displayed on the left side of the index page). Interestingly, now they have also added some easy-to-learn/use exercises and games (developed by students for students!), which are intended to reinforce or complement the selected Study Guides topics (I had fun trying the speed reading game!).
Thinking like a Genius!
Are you getting excited? If not, I will just have to share with you nine (9) quick tips from the site on how to think like a genius:
- Look at problems in many different ways, and find new perspectives that no one else has taken (or no one else has publicized!)
- Visualize!
- Produce! A distinguishing characteristic of genius is productivity.
- Make novel combinations. Combine, and recombine, ideas, images, and thoughts into different combinations no matter how incongruent or unusual.
- Form relationships; make connections between dissimilar subjects.
- Think in opposites.
- Think metaphorically.
- Prepare yourself for chance.
- The practice of genius
If you are planning to develop a study guide for your students, you should perhaps consider using the Study Guides & Strategies site as your main reference. Why reinvent the wheel (I mean Study Guides)?
Joe Landsberger (and his team) deserves a Honky Tonk Yamaguchi! thumbs up for this amazing project :)

THE STORY
— Zaid Ali Alsagoff (@zaidlearn) June 12, 2012
Late Saturday evening (2/06/2012), Nor Fadzleen and I figured out during an informal tweet (Twitter) discussion (out of no where!) that it would be great if there was an easy way to discover and connect with all those (awesome) educators in Malaysia who share online (e.g. blog) their learning and teaching resources, experiences, best practices, and are really passionate about transforming the Malaysian education landscape.
For starters, why not create a master list of all those Malaysian Learning Gladiators out there? So, here we are inviting you to fill up this simple form (8 questions only) to connect your learning and teaching awesomeness with the rest of us.
Now, we should not stop with only Malaysia, lets unite all the Learning Gladiators (or LGs) around the world! Prof. Zoraini thanks for your ambition and wisdom to go for it!

How to Make a Bibliography Easily!
I remember sitting next to my APA citation guide in college and struggling to find the right page... and it was a painful process. Then, I stumbled on this website and my life changed. This book turned bibliographies from a stressful thing that I needed to do (just when i thought i was finished) to a breeze.
What format do you use? APA? MLA? Chicago? Turabian? What do you need to cite? Books? Websites? Journals? Newspapers? Whatever it is... you can probably make a bibliography in 5 minutes... no joke.

For next weeks poll, Im going to add the option how to search on any blog, which is particularly helpful when a pin leaders you to a main blog page and not directly to the post you want!

How to Put a Watermark on Your Photo
Thank you everyone for voting on the technology poll! This week, the winner was How to Put a Watermark on a Photo!!!

Again, more than half of you voted for this in the poll!

I included two versions of this tutorial. In light blue, youll find directions on how to do everything right in GimpShop. Honestly, this is what I tend to do, as Im pretty comfortable using the program. For those of you who feel overwhelmed by the Gimp interface, I included alternate directions (in a medium blue) which include a brief portion in Gimp, and the remainder of the tutorial in Gimp. They both have the same effect, so its totally up to you!
Before I start the tutorial this focuses on how to use an image as a watermark. If you want to add text on your picture, click the picture below to check out my previous tutorial:

Now... onto the tutorial!

Now, for the tutorial that incorporates PowerPoint!

As far as next weeks poll is concerned, I just came across a MAJOR find in PowerPoint... Do you remember my previous post on giving a picture a transparent background? Well... I just stumbled across a way to do this right in PowerPoint!!! So obviously that will be on next weeks poll!

Learning Spaces A Free EDUCAUSE e Book
URL: http://www.educause.edu/content.asp?PAGE_ID=10569&bhcp=1
"Space, whether physical or virtual, can have a significant impact on learning. Learning Spaces focuses on how learner expectations influence such spaces, the principles and activities that facilitate learning, and the role of technology from the perspective of those who create learning environments: faculty, learning technologists, librarians, and administrators. Information technology has brought unique capabilities to learning spaces, whether stimulating greater interaction through the use of collaborative tools, videoconferencing with international experts, or opening virtual worlds for exploration. This e-book (446 pages) represents an ongoing exploration as we bring together space, technology, and pedagogy to ensure learner success."
(Entire book: PDF 20,173 KB)
By simply downloading this free e-book and exploring the learning space possibilities (from real stories at top Universities), you will probably get many new great ideas on how one can really utilize the space around us to create amazing learning environments. As the e-book is a whopping 446 pages, I strongly recommend that you simply browse through and get AHA-inspirations from all the pictures of amazing learning spaces, before going on the long reading journey. The only minus point, is that they should have included more pictures from these amazing learning spaces around the world, in addition to all the reasons and wisdoms behind their constructions.

Overall, next time you plan to revamp the Universitys (College or School) learning spaces (in addition to exploring this e-book), you should seek inspirations from the students and educators (and other key stakeholders), before getting swayed by the architects, designers and contractors. I am sure that the creativity from the Youth will pop-up a few great ideas that are hopefully cost-effective, too. Since they will be using these learning spaces, their visions and reflections should be nurtured as much as possible (Customer Focus). Start with a University competition: RM 1000 for the best learning space ideas for the library, classroom, labs, etc.
Then we can find out, whether the wisdom of the crowds really work for learning spaces :)
